Step 1: Getting to Know You

When you are in pain and missing out from the activities you love, you deserve a chance to have your entire story heard.

These days, it is difficult to get a doctor to really listen to you and your concerns for even 5 minutes! And unfortunately, many doctors are much more likely to prescribe pills or recommend surgery instead of taking the time to figure out the true “root-cause” of your problem.

This is everything that’s wrong with “healthcare” these days.

At Victory Performance And Physical Therapy, we understand every single person that reaches out to us is different. They have a unique history, body type, set of goals and desires.

For this reason, our very first step, before we begin any form of treatment, or even ask for $1 from you, is to get to know you better.

Step 2: Finding the “Root Cause” of Your Pain

Everything in our body is truly ‘connected’.

One of the biggest mistakes so many people make is focusing on the ‘symptom’ of pain without taking the time to properly evaluate and assess the true root-cause.

And THIS is the single biggest reason why so many people suffer from pain for much longer than they should.

What do I mean by the “root-cause”?

The Root-Cause of an injury can be one, or many parts of the body that may be stiff, weak, or lack the proper control. This may cause other parts of your body to “compensate” and cause pain someplace else.

What may be difficult for people to understand about these root-cause areas is that they may not actually be painful!

Some examples of this might be:

  • "Tight hips” pulling on your lower back causing stiffness when you wake up

  • A pinched-nerve in your neck causing “referred pain” down into your shoulder, arm, or shoulder blade area

  • An old ankle injury that didn't heal properly, causing your knee to hurt when you go down stairs

And often times it is problems with these connections or other non-painful parts of your body that are likely causing more pressure, strain and inflammation to be building up elsewhere.

How do we figure out the root cause of YOUR injury?

In order to figure out what these root-causes are for you and your body, we will take you through our unique and extensive Movement Profile.

What’s in a Movement Profile?

  • A head-to-toe assessment that will tell us WHY you move the way you do.

  • A deeper analysis of the ‘weak-links’ in your chain so we can determine why another part of your body may be compensating.

  • Identification of areas of stiffness in your body that may be causing tension in other areas of your body.

Every single possible connection within your body will be properly assessed. This is what gives you the best possible shot at not only relieving your pain, but making sure you can get back to doing the things you love, without the same problem returning!

Step 3: Your Personalized And Goal-Driven PLAN

A goal without a plan is just a wish!

This is THE MOST IMPORTANT step.  

We understand that every person is UNIQUE. 

  • Unique Diagnosis

  • Unique Root Cause

  • Unique Goals

  • Unique work/travel/financial/family/time constraints and/or challenges

ALL of the above needs to be taken into consideration if you want the best possible opportunity for success!

Unfortunately we’ve seen way too many referrals from doctors that have the same 2x/week for 6 weeks for ALL of their patients.  There’s absolutely no clinical thought that goes into scribbling this onto a note pad.  And then when physical therapy “doesn’t work” in 6 weeks for a problem that may have started months to years ago, then they can say that injections or surgery are your only options.  

Everything about this is wrong.

And the truth of the matter is that physicians are not the only one’s guilty of this.  Physical Therapists in MOST CLINICS do not understand the importance and/or DO NOT HAVE THE TIME to create a plan that will give their patients the best possible chance at being successful. 

You see, PT school doesn’t teach us about what it really feels like to be in your shoes. It’s very easy as a PT to get caught up in our EGOs… So if we (PTs) tell you to do something, why wouldn’t you do it?  “It’s in your best interest...”

Step 4: FIX the ROOT CAUSES Through “Manual Therapy”

In Step 2, we identify the root causes of your pain through our full-body Movement Profile. This allows us to focus on the KEY areas of YOUR body that we believe to be the cause of your pain or injury.

In Step 4, our goal is to first reduce, then eliminate your pain with hands-on treatment or manual therapy BEFORE you start to move or exercise.

Sadly, we hear of too many people suffering from pain for much longer than they should because they are told to stretch or exercise to get rid of the pain.

This thinking is often similar to having a broken car that will just fix itself by “driving it around a little”…

Which is why Step 4 is a critical foundational step before we fix your pain with movement.

So what is Manual Therapy?

At Victory Performance And Physical Therapy, our therapists are like “body mechanics”. We use our hands, or tools to help loosen or unlock your joints, muscles, and other areas of your body that are stiff, achy or cranky.

Our bodies are amazingly complex and there is built-in redundancy in order to allow us to complete 99% of the movement-related tasks that we throw at it, even when we are injured. 

This is great in the short term, but can lead to a sequelae of problems down the road and often lead to problems in other parts of the body.  

Through our manual therapy techniques, we are able to quickly locate, and “loosen” or “fix” these parts of the body so they can move how they should.

Some of these techniques include:

  • Trigger point release

  • Soft tissue massage

  • Myofascial release

  • Myofascial decompression (also known as cupping)

  • Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (also known as IASTM)

  • Deep tissue massage

  • Manual stretching

  • Joint manipulation

  • Joint mobilizations

Will these techniques hurt?

A common question that gets asked is whether these types of treatments should or will hurt or cause more pain.

Our answer is NO.

While these techniques may sometimes cause a small bit of discomfort at the time, they will not make you feel like you just got beat up. 

I want you to know that YOU will be in control of what happens to your body.

Before we perform ANY treatment, we will take the time to thoroughly explain every single technique or treatment to you, and how you will benefit from it, to make sure you understand and feel comfortable with our methods.

Our manual therapy techniques separate us from other clinics that may be exclusively exercise based, because it will help you restore mobility, and get rid of pain QUICKLY.

This will give you the best shot at being successful at achieving your goals.

Step 5: Restore Your Mind-Body Connection Through Personalized Movement and Mobility Programs

Many people aged 30+ who struggle with pain or injury may be told:

  • just start exercising

  • You need to strengthen your core

  • do some more walking and some light stretches

  • you just need to ‘fix’ your posture

However, if you are in pain, or have been injured, exercise is not something that should be taken for granted.

Yes, exercise IS an important aspect of healing from injury, but we often see, and hear of people that tried something they saw online and/or didn’t really understand how to do the exercise properly, and wound up in more pain than when they had originally.

Which is why at Victory Performance And Physical Therapy  our ‘exercise’ programs are specifically catered to your needs.

Our Doctors of Physical Therapy bring advanced knowledge of biomechanics, exercise physiology, kinesiology and neuroscience into designing your program.

What does that mean for you?

1. We teach you movements that are relevant and specific to YOUR needs and goals.

2. We will create a SAFE environment where you WILL NOT GET HURT. (Your exercise program will be carefully monitored by a DOCTOR of Physical Therapy. You will not work with any aides or assistants ‘in-training’ and you will receive highly focused, attentive care to ensure you are doing things the right way).

3. We will help you overcome fear of exercise and movement so you can get back to living normally. (We won’t be “yelling in your ear” or simply “counting repetitions” when you exercise. We will make sure that your body is ready to exercise, and that it is the RIGHT exercise for you.) We’ll monitor you very closely and make sure that you make each repetition count and move you closer to your goal.

The goal of exercising is not only to make you “stronger” but make you confident and comfortable to move and do the activities you want to.

Step 6: Restore Your Quality of Life

After performing our extensive evaluation, getting rid of your pain with movement, and helping you restore your mobility through exercise, we also want to make sure we have helped you achieve the goals you wanted in the first place!

So the last step is to make sure you have received the transformation you were looking for.

The body, mind, and human spirit is not something that should be underestimated. There is potential for improvement at every step of the way, despite even in the worst of conditions.

We have witnessed people who have avoided back surgeries, even when doctors have said nothing else can be done.

We have seen people diagnosed with severe labral tears in their hip be able to get back to big-wave surfing without surgery.

We have seen dads go back to playing with their kids at the park without ANY worry of their body going out, even though months before they had given up on being able to lead an active life, and written themselves off as just “being too old”.
