What to Expect from Shockwave Therapy

Step 1: Vibration Pulses

We start with a special device that transmits pneumatically generated vibration pulses, much like a percussion massager, to relax your muscles, stimulate your natural healing process, and to help reduce muscle tightness/tension.

Step 2: Shockwaves

We follow up the vibration with healing shockwaves and/or radial pressure waves that are administered based on your specific injury. We have a variety of transmitters to effectively treat a wide range of tissues, including tendons, fascia, muscles, and ligaments.

Step 3: Aftercare

Your session is finished in 15-20 minutes! It’s quick, it’s (relatively) painless, and you’re ready to resume most normal activities immediately. Most will see results in 3 to 6 sessions.

Conditions Commonly Treated with Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is often used to help with both chronic and acute soft tissue conditions, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis is a frequent cause of heel discomfort, often described as a sharp or stabbing pain, especially during the first steps in the morning. This condition involves irritation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. Shockwave therapy is commonly used to stimulate circulation in the affected area and encourage tissue regeneration. Many patients notice a gradual improvement in heel pain over a series of sessions.

  • Elbow pain from gripping, lifting, or typing can come from irritated tendons around the joint. Pain on the outer side is often called tennis elbow, while pain on the inner side is known as golfer’s elbow.

Shockwave therapy is often part of the care plan for these conditions, helping reduce discomfort and support the healing process in the surrounding tissue.

  • Limited range of motion, pain with overhead movement, or a lingering ache in the shoulder often points to irritation in the rotator cuff—a group of tendons that help stabilize the joint. This type of discomfort can make everyday tasks like reaching, lifting, or even sleeping more difficult.

Shockwave therapy is commonly used to help ease soft tissue tension in the shoulder and support the body’s natural healing response, especially in areas where circulation is limited and recovery tends to be slower.

  • Tightness or pain just above the heel—especially during walking, running, or after long periods of standing—often stems from irritation in the Achilles tendon. This thick tendon connects your calf to your heel and plays a key role in every step you take.

Shockwave therapy is often used to target the affected area, helping improve circulation and support tissue healing in a spot where blood flow is typically limited.

  • Often experienced by runners and athletes who have recently increased training intensity or changed surfaces, shin splints involve discomfort along the inner edge of the shin bone. This condition reflects irritation of the muscles, tendons, and connective tissue in the lower leg. Shockwave therapy may be used to support healing in this area by encouraging blood flow and tissue regeneration. It’s frequently considered when symptoms have persisted despite changes in footwear, rest, or modification of training load.

If traditional approaches like rest, ice, or stretching haven’t been effective, shockwave therapy may offer another path forward. It’s one of several tools we use to support recovery and improve tissue health.
